Police on high alert

LAHORE, May 2: The Punjab police were put on high alert on Monday after the killing of Al-Qaeda top leader Osama Bin Laden by US special forces in Abbotabad.
All regional police officers and district police officers of Punjab were directed to intensify security in and around army and police establishments besides churches.
Sources in the Punjab police told Dawn that after Laden’s killing and expected terror attacks on establishments and convoys of armed forces and police, all field police officers had been strictly directed to depute policemen at identified places and also monitor the deployment and patrolling.
The information was passed to the field formations by telephones, they added.
In the provincial capital, as many as 120 armed additional policemen were deployed in and around sensitive government buildings and offices of armed forces and police.
Up to 60 Rangers personnel took security duty in and around the US Consulate near Simla Pahari to avoid any possible reaction by the extremists.
SSP (operations) Muhammad Faisal Rana told Dawn that keeping in view the threat alerts regarding possible attacks on the establishments of armed forces and police, the security had been beefed up across the city and additional police officials deputed in and around already guarded buildings and installations. He said extra security was also provided to all foreign missions and consulates in the city.
