Man held for ‘blasphemy’

RAHIM YAR KHAN: The police on Friday arrested a suspect on blasphemy charge in Lunda Bazaar near Chowk Pathanistan.

The suspect, of Kandh Kot, was running a business of packaging with his brothers in Lunda Bazaar and lived in a rented flat in the same area.

On Friday, after Juma prayers, he was spotted by some people burning the pages of the holy Quran in the bazaar. When challenged, he locked himself inside the flat.

Soon, the police, led by City DSP circle Javed Akhtar Jatoi, arrived at the scene, condoned off the area and arrested the suspect.

The mob tried to beat the suspect but the police averted any untoward situation and shifted him to some undisclosed place.

The mob of hundreds of people encircled the police station and started chanting slogans against the suspect.

They also blocked the city bridge.

Later, Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan leader Riaz Noori controlled the mob.

Police spokesperson Zeeshan Randhawa said a first information report had been registered against the accused
