BAHAWALNAGAR: A police team confiscated illegal subscriber identity modules (SIMs) activation devices and busted a five-member inter-district gang on Monday.

The gang was involved in selling SIMs through illegal channels in different cities and to those who used Benazir Income Support Programme to swindle people.

According to a press release, the Bahawalnagar police had been receiving complaints about the gang and DPO Muhammad Anwar Khaitran constituted a team, led by Saddar Circle DSP Amjad Javed Kamboh.

The task was given to Saddar SHO Saifullah Haneef and a special team was constituted for the purpose.

The release said the team used the latest technology and busted a five-member gang. The arrested are Sarfaraz, Salman, Akmal, Muhammad Asad and Usman. The team recovered three SIM activation devices and 40 SIM jackets from them.

The suspects targeted people and used to visit villages, where they told women that they would receive money through BISP and used their thumb prints to SIM cards in their names.

The suspects worked for telecom companies and used their knowledge to activate illegal SIMs. The activated SIMs were later sold to people involved in criminal activities across the country.

Police have registered a case against the suspects and are contacting Federal Investigation Agency and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority for proper investigation.
