BAHAWALPUR: The Baghdadul Jadid police claimed on Monday to have smashed a gang dealing in fake registration of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and arrested its three members, including a woman.

According to PRO Umar Saleem of DPO, the gang was unearthed on the complaint of citizen Ikram Ali of Millat Colony near One-Unit Chowk.

Police on the complaint of Ikram Ali registered a case under sections 419, 420, 468 and 471 of PPC against seven suspects namely ring leader Muhammad Shahbaz, Kashif, Jamil, Aamir alias Sultan, Ayub, woman Ms. Fauzia Shaheen and van driver Waseem Abbas.

Police alleged that the suspects, led by Shahbaz, visited Millat Colony by a van and impersonated BISP staff. They began to register names and data of the deserving men and women and verify thumb impressions with a biometric device, which they carried with them. During the process, when Ikram Ali and friends asked about their [BISP] identity cards, they managed their escape.

The complainant said the suspects were verifying cell phone numbers along with CNICs of the people. Police claimed to have arrested Jamil, Fauzia, driver Waseem and recovered from them several bogus SIMs.

Raids are under way to nab the remaining suspects.
