Crackdown on traffic rule violators

LAHORE -  Traffic police arrested at least 35,828 drivers over serious violations of traffic laws during the last 10 months in the Punjab province.  Similarly, at least 471,347 vehicles were impounded by police during the ongoing crackdown .

DIG Traffic Police Muhammad Farooq Mazhar on Thursday told reporters that a crackdown was launched against underage drivers on the directions of Punjab Police Inspector General Arif Nawaz Khan to discourage the growing trend. Several special police squads are taking part in the campaign to punish juveniles drivers particularly motorcycle riders.

 “During the first 10 months of this year, the Punjab traffic police impounded 471,347 vehicles while 35,828 drivers were arrested for breaking traffic rules,” the officer said. Also, the police department issued tickets worth Rs 1.897 billion to the law breakers this year.

DIG Farooq Mazhar further said that a special campaign had been launched against juvenile drivers, illegal and unauthorized number plates, tainted glasses, and one-wheeling. He also claimed that the road accidents ratio decreased by 3.73 percent after the police launched a full-fledged campaign to strictly implement road safety measures.

The DIG said that the police are ordered to intensity crackdown on juvenile drivers across the province. The department this year has also arranged several schemes for traffic awareness among the masses including workshops, TV shows, walks, and seminars.
