Inspector General of Police, Punjab Mohammad Habib-ur-Rehman has said that Chief Minister Punjab Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif has given approval of recruiting ten thousand police constables every year to remove the shortage of strength in police of the province. He added that three meetings of promotion board have been held to promote DSPs as SPs after finalizing principles and removing hurdles with the consultation of all stake holders. He said that various steps have also been taken for the promotion and welfare of police officers and constables and 15% quota has been fixed for promotion of Inspectors recruited directly in the force.
He stated this while addressing to media representatives after presiding two different meetings relating to Law and Order held in Rawalpindi and Attock today simultaneously. In first meeting Regional Police Officer, Rawalpindi Capt. (R) Muhammad Zubair, CPO Azhar Hameed Khokhar, all police officers of Rawalpindi and in second meeting DPO Attock Muhammad Hilal Khan along with all Divisional Police Officers were participated.
He further said that DSPs of executive cadre, DSPs of traffic and DSPs of legal cadre have been promoted as SPs after holding the meeting of promotion board. Responding to a question, IGP said that a positive change is being brought in thana culture by taking steps to ensure decency towards citizens coming to police stations for lodging their complaints and an action against criminals rightly under law. He added that the protection of life, property and respect of the citizens is the prime duty of the police and for discharge of these duties perfectly by police officers and officials, professional refresher courses, and physical fitness training are being introduced from constable to DPO level. He further said that to ensure justice to the people police officers also resist undue pressure from all sides. He also added that 107 police officers taking part in encounter in area of police station Chontra (Rawalpindi) have been awarded with rewards and certificates.
He disclosed that there is shortage of 600 constables in the strength of Rawalpindi Police. He further said that directions have also been issued to maintain belly up to 38 inches by police officers and officials along with their overall physical fitness. In reply of a question he disclosed that total 80 police encounters were held in the province to nab hardened criminals and proclaimed offenders in the province.
Mohammad Habib-ur-Rehman said that he held meetings at regional level to improve performance of police and now he has started visiting districts and reviewing performance of the police at district level from Rawalpindi. He said that Government wanted to make each police station a model police station by providing all possible resources and to eradicate crime from the society. He said that the efficient and honest police officers and officials would be awarded with rewards, while those showing negligence and performing poor in discharge of their duties would be dealt sternly under disciplinary rules.
Provincial Police Chief said that an internal accountability cell has also been established to assess the performance of the police and check the excesses of the police officers and officials at regional and district level. IGP on this occasion also gave awards to the police officers and officials performing excellently in an encounter against criminals held recently in area of Police Station Chontra.
