LAHORE:The 9th Muharram main procession was taken out after Fajr prayers from Pando Street in Islampura under stringent security arrangements. The procession proceeded along its traditional route through Alamgir Road, Noori Building, Main Islampura Bazaar, Baba Ground, Civil Secretariat and Anarkali before reaching Khaima-e-Sadaat, where it was scheduled to pause before returning along the same route and conclude at Pando Street around midnight. Thousands of mourners participated in the procession, paying tribute to the sacred symbols associated with Karbala, including Zuljanah and other religious relics. Participants performed self-flagellation while reciting elegies and nohas in remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala. Sabeels offering water and refreshments, as well as langar stalls providing food, were arranged at various points along the route by devotees and welfare groups. Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem said no compromise would be made on the security of processions, majalis and mourners. He directed field officers to personally supervise security and traffic arrangements and ensure additional deployment at sensitive locations.
Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi visited several procession routes and diversion points to review arrangements. More than 2,300 traffic wardens and over 200 inspectors were deployed to regulate traffic and ensure the smooth movement of emergency vehicles. Rescue and emergency services were also placed on high alert. Rescue 1122 deployed 1,350 rescuers, 55 ambulances and 300 rescue motorcycles across Lahore, while specialised rescue vehicles and emergency response teams remained on standby. Medical camps and first-aid posts were established along procession routes to provide immediate assistance to mourners. The Edhi Foundation cancelled staff leave and deployed 50 ambulances and 150 volunteers at key locations throughout the city to assist participants and respond to emergencies. Officials expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by law enforcement agencies, rescue services, religious leaders and community representatives would help ensure the peaceful observance of Ashura across Lahore and the rest of Punjab.
