LAHORE - Punjab Police, under the direction of Inspector General Dr Usman Anwar, implemented strict security arrangements across Lahore and other parts of the province on the 2nd of Muharram. According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, more than 26,000 police officers and personnel were deployed to safeguard mourning processions and majalis held throughout the province. In Lahore alone, over 2,800 police officers and personnel were assigned to ensure foolproof security. On the 2nd of Muharram, a total of 90 mourning processions and 3,495 majalis were held across Punjab. The provincial capital hosted 8 processions and 386 majalis on this day. More than 14,000 community volunteers also participated in assisting security arrangements across the province. IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar said that high-alert security will continue throughout the first ten days of Muharram.
He added that Section 144 is being strictly enforced across Punjab. Aerial firing, display of weapons, dissemination of hate material, and incitement through speech or action are strictly prohibited. No gatherings or processions are allowed outside officially designated routes and venues. All activities are being closely monitored through cameras installed by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and district administrations. Various police units, including the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, PRU, and other field formations, are actively engaged in Muharram security duties. The IG has also instructed strict implementation of the Loudspeaker Act and directed a crackdown on individuals spreading hateful content on social media platforms.
