Traditional Rivals Australia and England Face Off at Gaddafi Stadium. Punjab Police on High Alert.
Under the direction of IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar, full security was provided to players, officials, and cricket fans.
The first match of the ICC Champions Trophy was held on Saturday at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, where traditional rivals Australia and England competed. On the instructions of Inspector General of Police Punjab Dr Usman Anwar, Punjab Police remained on high alert, ensuring comprehensive security for the players, officials, and cricket fans. Dr Usman Anwar directed that, in light of the international cricket event's security, close monitoring of anti-national elements must be maintained. He emphasised that no stone should be left unturned to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of international matches. Dr Usman Anwar further said that effective and close coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board, district administration, security agencies, and all relevant institutions must be ensured.
Punjab Police spokesperson shared that more than 12,000 police officers and personnel were deployed for the security of the Australia and England match. Snipers were positioned at players' residences, routes, the stadium, and surrounding tall buildings. The Dolphin Squad, Police Response Units, and Elite teams carried out effective patrolling around key routes and locations, while Safe City cameras were used for continuous monitoring of the teams' routes, the stadium, and other important locations. Additional traffic wardens were deployed to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow and proper parking.
IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar instructed that search, sweep, combing, and intelligence-based operations continue around players' residences, routes, and the stadium. Security staff stationed at the entry and exit points of the stadium and gates were instructed to interact with citizens politely. IG Punjab urged the fans to cooperate with Punjab Police in order to enjoy international cricket in a safe environment.
