IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar’s directive: Punjab Police continues action against smog and environmental violations
32 offenders arrested and 53 cases registered during the first 19 days of the year.
Acting on the instructions of Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr Usman Anwar, the Punjab Police is actively conducting operations to curb smog and protect the environment. As part of this ongoing campaign, two cases were registered, and offenders were arrested during a crackdown on smog in Lahore and other districts over the past 24 hours.
According to the Punjab Police spokesperson, fines totalling Rs. 948,000 were imposed on 309 individuals, and warnings were issued to 35 others. Violations included burning crop residues (1 incident), emissions from excessive smoke-producing vehicles (309 violations), and violations by brick kilns (9 cases).
In the first 19 days of this year, the anti-smog campaign has resulted in the arrest of 32 individuals and the registration of 53 cases. Fines exceeding Rs. 15.9 million were imposed on 7,920 violators, and warnings were issued to 621 individuals. Reported violations included 15 cases of crop residue burning, 7,932 excessive smoke-emitting vehicles, 26 brick kilns, three industrial facilities, and three other locations.
Over the past 24 hours, challans were issued to 3,347 vehicles emitting excessive smoke, and 230 vehicles were impounded. During the first 19 days of this year, challans were issued to 62,822 vehicles, over 7,000 vehicles were impounded, and fitness certificates of 51 vehicles were suspended.
IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar has directed a further intensification of the anti-smog crackdown across highways, industrial areas, agricultural zones, and other sites. He emphasised a zero-tolerance policy, instructing officers to ensure swift and strict action against those violating smog SOPs.
