Under the instructions of Inspector General Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, Punjab Police has been taking active measures across the province to combat smog and safeguard the environment. Over the last 24 hours, 92 cases were registered, and 20 individuals were apprehended as part of the smog crackdown in Lahore and other districts. Additionally, fines exceeding 642,000 rupees were imposed on 390 individuals, and 28 warnings were issued. Punjab Police spokesperson briefed that violations included 23 incidents of burning crop residues, 413 cases of vehicles emitting excessive smoke, 31 industrial violations, 33 infractions at brick kilns, and 14 other breaches were reported in the last 24 hours. Spokesperson also said that this year’s overall anti-smog efforts have led to the arrest of 2,189 individuals and the registration of 2,694 cases. Cumulatively, fines amounting to over 54.4 million rupees have been imposed on 23,306 individuals, and 1,407 warnings have been issued.
Reported violations this year comprise 1,591 instances of crop residue burning, 20,149 cases of excessive vehicle emissions, 327 industrial violations, 1,078 brick kiln offenses, and 284 other types of violations. In the last 24 hours, 7,085 challans were issued for vehicles producing excessive emissions, 681 vehicles were impounded, and one vehicle’s fitness certificate was suspended. So far this year, 756,041 vehicle challans have been issued, 159,640 vehicles have been impounded, and fitness certificates for 10,024 vehicles have been suspended. IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has directed an intensification of the anti-smog crackdown on highways, industrial areas, agricultural fields, and other locations, stressing that strict, zero-tolerance action should be taken promptly against those violating smog SOPs.
