Under the instructions of Inspector General Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, Punjab Police is continuing its legal proceedings for environmental protection and the prevention of smog. The crackdown against vehicles, factories, and kiln owners responsible for causing smog has been intensified across all the districts. According to Punjab Police Spokesperson, so far this year, 753 accused have been arrested, and 999 cases have been registered as part of the anti-smog campaign. Similarly, in the provincial capital, 71 accused have been arrested and 180 cases have been registered in anti-smog operations.
Spokesperson punjab police further said that this year, 1,33,737 vehicles emitting excessive smoke have been fined, with penalties totaling over 210.48 million rupees. Additionally, 43,045 vehicles with substandard fitness were impounded in police stations, and fitness certificates of 2,510 vehicles were suspended due to high emissions. Route permits of 1,476 vehicles were also suspended, and 163 vehicles emitting toxic fumes were subjected to FIRs.
IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has directed that acceleration of anti-smog crackdown on highways, industrial areas, and other locations. IG punjab while instructing the Traffic Police and Punjab Highway Patrol directed that swift action should be ensured against vehicles contributing to smog. He further directed that Safe City cameras be utilized to monitor and take action against such vehicles. Immediate measures should also be taken against vehicles, factories, and the burning of crops that contribute to smog across the province. Dr. Usman Anwar emphasized that Punjab Police is providing full support to the Environment Department in combating smog. He also instructed field officers to ramp up efforts for environmental protection, ensuring strict enforcement against the burning of crop residues, brick kilns, and waste.
