BAHAWALNAGAR: Two Elite Force officials died and three others sustained injuries when a police vehicle plunged into a nullah on Rojhanwali Road due to low visibility caused by a heavy fog in the wee hours of Saturday. Police say that on receiving a tip-off about the presence of some proclaimed offenders (POs) wanted in different cases of heinous crime in Rojhanwali village, a team led by the B division station house officer (SHO), including eight Elite Force officials, went for a raid late on Friday night. When the police team was returning from the village around 2am amid a heavy fog, after conducting an unsuccessful raid, their official vehicle plunged into a nullah on Rojhanwali Road.
As a result, two of the Elite Force officials died on the spot, while three others suffered multiple injuries. A district police spokesperson said that in the accident, the vehicle driver, Constable Rizwan Shukat and Head Constable Kashif died on the spot, while constables Abdullah Tariq, Mehmood and Majid suffered injuries. The injured policemen were shifted to the district headquarters hospital, he said, adding that later Majid was referred to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, due to his critical condition. Taking immediate notice of the incident, Punjab Police Inspector General Dr Usman Anwer directed the DPO office to immediately contact the families of the deceased policemen and the injured person for their financial help.
