GUJRAT: Speakers at a five-day training workshop under the “young journalists leadership programme” emphasised the need for research-based authentic content for responsible journalism on social media. The workshop opening session was held at the Police Lines in collaboration with the Mass Communication Department of the University of Gujrat, here on Monday. A group of around 50 students of the last semester of the UoG mass communication department has been selected to attend the workshop. Gujrat District Police Officer Syed Asad Muzaffar said the programme was aimed at developing a better working relationship between the media and police to improve its image among the masses.
Gujrat Press Club President Basharat Lodhi said the students of media studies should become practicing journalists with an aim and passion of serving the community through truthful and research-based content. Journalist Waseem Ashraf Butt said that the importance of quality content in the age of social and digital media was vital to minimise the adverse effects of fake news on social media and the students of media studies and social media activists should avoid promoting or sharing fake content. The speakers also advised students to build reading habit to get authentic knowledge of history. SP Investigation Raiz Naaz said that police had been striving to curb crime in the society and there was a need to develop a better working relationship between the media personnel and police. Gujrat Sadar Circle DSP Malik Adnan briefed the students about the working methods of police. The workshop will continue until Friday (Oct 17).
