LAHORE: Police claimed on Saturday to have arrested two suspects involved in looting Rs1.2 million from a Japanese woman. A police spokesperson said Yoko Ikeki had come to Pakistan to buy precious stones from a [Twitter] friend Asif, whom she had known for two years. Asif introduced her to two other men, Daniyal and Qasim, who claimed to be dealers of gemstones. Ikeki stated in her complaint that she had purchased some stones worth Rs1.2m from a shop and handed them over to Daniyal and Qasim for verification. The suspects told her that the stones were fake and asked her to return them to the shop and get her money back. She went to the shop and got her money refunded.
Ikeki said she trusted Daniyal and Qasim and gave them Rs1.2m and left Pakistan. She said she kept calling them for updates, but they kept delaying and eventually blocked her number. She then approached the foreign office of Pakistan and was advised to file a case in Lahore. She came back to Pakistan and lodged a complaint with the Gulberg police under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The police, with the assistance of Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA), traced and arrested both the suspects and recovered Rs1.2m from their possession. The police also handed over the money to Ikeki.
