Two bikers who fired on police held after encounter

BAHAWALPUR: The Burewala police in Vehari district claimed on Saturday to have arrested two armed motorcyclists after an encounter on Saturday. The suspects [later identified as] Allah Rakha and Majid allegedly opened fire on a police party and a group of citizens in a failed attempt to commit a burglary in the vicinity of Allahabad colony. According to police spokesman Adnan Tariq, the police received information about the suspects’ activities late on Friday night. A police party, led by DPO Essa Khan and DSP Muhammad Umar Farooq, chased the suspects, who were riding on two motorcycles. The suspects opened fire on the police party and managed to flee from the scene. They later opened fire on a group of citizens, creating panic in the area. The citizens managed to overpower Allah Rakha who was injured. A semi-automatic rifle and a motorcycle were recovered from his possession. The police chased Majid, and arrested him from a nearby field where he had sought refuge. A pistol was recovered from his possession. Three of their suspects managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Allah Rakha, who is a history sheeter in several burglary cases, was admitted to Vehari DHQ hospital for treatment. The police have registered cases against all five suspects and are conducting raids to arrest the remaining three.
