Vocational training centre for transpersons

BAHAWALPUR: Taking a unique initiative, the Lodhran district police have opened a vocational training institute, exclusively for transpersons, to impart skills to them that will help them earn a decent livelihood. According to Lodhran District Police Officer (DPO) Hissam Bin Iqbal, the vocational training institute has been opened with a view to empower the transgender community and impart to them training in garment sewing and other trades. He says that after completing the courses being offered at the institute, transperons can earn their livelihood in an honourable way and won’t have to beg or dance. The vocational training institute has been opened in the existing police protection centre (Police Tahafuz Markaz) in Lodhran. Centre in-charge Ms Fouzia Sahar said that initially ten transperosns have been admitted to the institute for their training. She said the police administration has provided sewing machines and other accessories related to different skills being imparted at the institute. The transpersons admitted to the institute appreciated the district police for making the arrangements for them and said after the completion of their training, they would be able to earn a decent livelihood and become useful members of society.
