LAHORE: In a major development, the Punjab Finance Department has abolished 506 seats of traffic wardens (TW) and converted them into senior traffic wardens (STW). The long-standing issue of promotions of the traffic wardens was addressed after Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar moved a summary to the chief minister for the creation of new posts of STWs with an objective to grant promotion to traffic wardens. An official said that the summary was moved by the additional IG Traffic through the Punjab police chief for approval from the CM.
He said as the summary reached the office of the finance department, its secretary informed the IG that summary for the creation of posts didn’t require approval from the chief minister. He further informed him that since the posts of the traffic wardens had been created by his department itself, it had been vested with powers to abolish or create the posts of BS-1 to BS-16.After consultation with the IGP, the finance department abolished the 560 seats of the traffic wardens (BS-14) and converted 506 slots of them into the senior traffic warden posts (BS-16).
However, no additional expenses will be incurred on the exchequer after the creation of new posts.An official source said that the posts of the traffic wardens (BS-14) were created in 2006 and since then they were deprived of their fundamental right of promotion. Meanwhile, addressing the traffic wardens here on Wednesday in Lahore, Dr Usman Anwar said that the summary has been approved to launch the process of departmental promotions of the traffic wardens.He said that there will be an A-list exam on April 15 and B-list exam on April 23 for the departmental promotion of the traffic wardens. He said the traffic police personnel showing best performance would also be given prizes of Rs7.5m this week.
