BAHAWALPUR: The Abbasnagar police claimed to have solved around a decade old case pertaining to mysterious “disappearance” of an 11-year-old boy, recovering the remains of his body from a pit in the house of a woman on Tuesday. According to District Police Officer Syed Muhaammad Abbas, Shahid Iqbal (11) had gone missing mysteriously in 2013. The boy’s father got registered an FIR (No.297/13), alleging abduction of his son under section 363 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) at the Abbasnagar police station. The police interrogated several suspects but failed to find any clue to the boy and the case remained unsolved for around a decade.
District police spokesperson Umar Saleem told Dawn that the DPO, while reviewing the old cases, took notice of the boy’s disappearance and directed the officials to launch a fresh probe into the matter. The police officials, with the help of modern technology and after a thorough investigation traced a suspect, Mukhtaran Bibi, who during interrogation revealed that the boy got “accidentally” shot by her son Rashid and died. The woman said that fearing arrest of hi son, she dumped the boy’s body in her courtyard. On identification by the woman, the police, after digging the floor of the house’s courtyard, recovered the remains of the boy’s body and sent it for an autopsy.
The police said that the woman’s son was absconding and yet to be arrested. Meanwhile, district police claimed today to have arrested within twenty-four hours as many as fifty “anti-social elements” under different charges, including bootlegging, illegal arms and gambling in the limits of Bahawalpur Saddar, Channigoth and Head Rajkan police stations of the district.
