Four held for ‘thrashing’ policemen

BAHAWALNAGAR: Chishtian Saddar police on Saturday arrested four people and registered a case against 28 a day after they were booked for thrashing a police team during an attempt to occupy a piece of land at Chak-11 Gajyani.

According to the first information report (FIR), 28 people, including nine women identified as Zahida, Siddiqa, Samina, Sheeman, Zulekhan, Sughran, Sumaira, Safiya, Ghulam Aisha, beat five policemen with batons when they went to inspect a crime scene. When police reached the site and asked the people to stop their activity, the enraged people attacked it and hit SI Muneeb, ASIs Saeed and Sabir Muneer and constables Azhar and Asif with batons and butts of guns.

The families of the suspects accused police of implicating them in a fake case at the behest of their rivals. They demanded the IGP launch an inquiry. In another case, Dunga Bunga police arrested two traders for allegedly threatening to kill policemen and trying to get a drug peddler released from custody.

The FIR, registered on complaint of ASI Muhammad Afzal, said that on Nov 16, a police team, including ASIs Muhammad Afzal and Azizul Rahman and constables Falak Sher and Afzal, raided the shop of Kashif and arrested him with 250 gram charas. Meanwhile, 15 to 16 people intercepted the team and tried to get Kashif released.

On the other hand, some shopkeepers told Dawn that ASI Afzal was in civvies but when he showed his identity, they allowed him to go. Dunga Bunga police booked 16 shopkeepers. A police official told Dawn that the said ASI conducted the raid on false information. The official claimed that Kashif was not a drug peddler.
