Six model police stations in City: IGP

INSPECTOR General of Police, Punjab, Javed Iqbal has said that six police stations in each division of Lahore police and one in each district of the province will be declared as model police stations to redress complainants’ grievances without any delay.
Talking exclusively to the reporters of print media at his office on Monday, IGP Javed Iqbal said that following the special instructions of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, around six police stations, one in each division of Lahore police, would be declared as model police station for immediate redress of the grievances of citizens. He added that the complainants relating to the limits of any police station could register his/her complaint at the model police station. He said that trained and highly qualified officials and officers would be deputed at the model police stations (MPS) for operations and investigation purposes.
He said the model police stations would be established later in each district of the province to improve the image of Punjab police by providing justice to the masses.
When asked how much time Punjab police will take to make the model police stations operational, the IG said that as the things were not institutionalised, it would take quite time. IGP Javed Iqbal also said that he had suggested the Punjab government that Qalandara under section 182 of PPC against the person who provided false information should be registered to stop registration of fake FIRs.
Talking about the accountability of police officials and officers, he said that action had been taken against 300 police officials and officers in around 1,500 incidents during the first five months of the current year. He added that the purpose of giving punishment to the officials is reformation.
He also said about 50 complainants visited his office daily for the redress of their grievances from across the province. About corruption at police station level, he said that DSPs had been activated to control corruption and he had been receiving positive response from the DSPs who were earlier inactive.
To a question, the IGP said that he had directed the RPOs, DPOs and CCPOs to direct the SHOs for the registration of FIRs under section 489-F for cheque bounce without any delay. However, he said that maximum 15 days would be given to the SHOs concerned to investigate suspicious complaints lodged for the registration of cases to avoid registration of fake cases. He also said that SHOs would consult the SPs concerned to register cases under section 506 of PPC.
To another question, the IGP said that community had a great role in the maintenance of law and order under Police Rules 1934. He said that though people resisted change in the prevailing system, Punjab police would utilise maximum resources to bring about change in police culture. The IGP told the media that around 100 officials of Lahore police had been trained for quality investigation and they would have capability to investigate by using latest technology being provided at the Modern Forensic Science Laboratory. He added that forensic science lab would start working in June 2011.
Giving details about the performance of Punjab police during the first five months of current year, the IGP claimed that it smashed 1,042 criminals’ gangs by arresting their 3,625 members, traced 5366 cases and recovered loot worth Rs 457670094. Similarly, 28 proclaimed offenders were arrested and eight were killed having Rs 18.75 million head money.
Moreover, 38,253 POs and 17,377 court absconders were arrested during the period.
He said police also arrested POs involved in heinous crimes i.e. 2,258 of murder cases, 1,585 involved in dacoity, 2,523 involved in robbery and 149 POs involved in abduction for ransom. Javed Iqbal said 18,278 accused persons having illicit arms were also arrested and a big quantity of illegal arms was seized whereas 23,319 persons were arrested in narcotics cases and a huge quantity of narcotics was seized. Talking about a successful operation by the Punjab police against the accused involved in abduction for ransom in Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan districts, the IGP said that 18 gangs were targeted during this operation and 205 POs were arrested and three killed whereas six police officials were injured and two were martyred. The IGP said that 15 police officials were martyred and 37 injured during the crackdown on criminals in the first five months of current year while around 103 criminals were killed and 33 injured in different encounters with the police. Later, Lahore CCPO Ahmad Raza Tahir said that reporting centres were being established soon in the offices of divisional SPs Operations, where citizens would be able to lodge their FIRs as well. He added that the Lahore police would adopt offensive policy to protect the life and property of the citizens.
