LAHORE, Oct 6: The City Traffic Police is about to launch a full-fledged driving school at the Traffic Police Lines, LOS Thokar to impart three-week training course of international standards, teach driving rules and regulations and discourage unregistered/unauthorised driving schools.
Those who will get through the course will be issued certificates and driving licences.
Chief Traffic Officer Sohail Chaudhry told Dawn that road marking, installation of solar traffic signals, slope for forward and reverse purposes, and sitting area had been formally set up over six kanals in financial assistance with Zic Lubricants.
He said the seven-member staff including three women traffic wardens had been trained for delivering lectures at the new classroom and teach driving in designated area and on city roads. He said women wardens would impart driving training to girls and women.
The CTO said Rs5,000 had been fixed as course fee which was equal or less than fees being offered by private driving schools. He said the candidates applying for Light Transport Vehicle (LTV) would also be getting training course at the driving school besides getting certificates and licences.
He said two cars and a single-cabin pickup would be used for driving test. He said currently all driving schools in the city were operating without registration and needed approval of the District Licensing Authority (the CTO) under the Punjab Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965.
He said after the CTP’s driving school became operational possibly after Eidul Azha, all private facilities would be issued directives to get them registered with it and meet specific standards within required timeframe.
He said currently private driving schools were offering courses costing up to Rs10,000 each. He said the main objective of the course and training was to teach people how to make their driving secure, make them learn about all required traffic rules, discourage unauthorised and substandard driving schools and touts.
The CTO further said refresher courses would be launched afterwards.
