RPOs for increase in police strength
LAHORE, July 26: Participants in a meeting held at the Punjab Police Headquarters on Tuesday discussed in detail the shortage in police strength and floated several proposals to the provincial police chief.
All regional police officers of Punjab attended the one-point agenda meeting presided over by Inspector General of Punjab Police Javed Iqbal and submitted their working papers regarding police shortage.
Sources told Dawn it was discussed in the meeting that the police strength had not been increased subsequently in proportion to the population increase in the light of Police Rules 1934.
They said proposals floated by the RPOs were taken up seriously by the IG who decided to speak to the Punjab chief minister for new recruitments.
Sources said the IG was informed that the population criteria under Police Rules 1934 (one police officer for 450 citizens) had surpassed and in several districts the current ratio was one officer for 1,000 and above citizens.
Meanwhile, the IG also reviewed law and order situation, especially security arrangements related to the forthcoming month of Ramazan in another meeting also held at the IG office.
He directed all senior officers to ensure foolproof security arrangements at mosques/imambargahs and during Traveeh gatherings.
