Police has to face the serious challenges of terrorism, extremism and sectarianism besides crime control and maintenance of law and order in the province and only during last 1 decade, 405 police officials sacrificed their lives for the purpose.
This was stated by the Inspector General of Police Punjab, Khan Baig while addressing to 57 participants of 99th batch of National Management Course at CPO, Lahore today. Addl: IGP Punjab, Sarmad Saeed Khan, Addl: IGP PHP, Suhail Khan, Addl: IGP Training, Capt. (R) Muhammad Usman Khattak, DIG Headquarters Punjab, Muhammad Tahir, DIG Training, Tariq Masood Yasin, DIG Operations Punjab, Farooq Mazhar, DIG CTD Punjab, Amir Zulfiqar, DIG Establishment, Amjad Javaid Saleemi, PSO to IGP Punjab, Muhammad Ali Naik-o-Kara, AIG Admin and Security, Sajjad Hassan Khan Manj, AIG Discipline, Romail Akram and AIG Operations, Muhammad Waqas Nazir were also present in the meeting.
While briefing the participants on the occasion, DIG Operations Punjab, Farooq Mazhar told that, at present the total force of Punjab Police is 177,669. According to police rules standards, there must be one police official per 450 persons, whereas, according to the population of the province this percentage becomes one police official per 1250 persons. He further told that, in 1947, the total strength of Punjab Police was 34000 which should be enhanced upto three times as the population of Punjab raised upto 98 million. He also briefed that only in 2013, 4226 different demonstrations were held, whereas, 2264 rallies were taken out, 1507 roads were blocked during different protests, 764 sit in were organized and 513 strikes were called by various organizations.
Moreover, he also briefed about the working of Punjab Highway Patrolling, Training, CTD, Elite Police Force and other sister organizations of the Punjab Police. While briefing about the terrorism, he told that during last five years, 398 terrorists have been arrested during the period. The participants were also briefed about the amendments in Police Order 2002. He told that under these amendments by transferring the first change of investigation powers to DPOs, the complainant’s grievances were reduced by 98 percent.
While answering to the questions of the participants, IGP told that the Internal Accountability System as compare to other departments is very good and during the current year only 30000 officials awarded minor punishments, whereas, 30000 awarded major punishments.
