Public support helps rebuild police image
LAHORE-Two District Police Officers (DPOs) and one City Police Officer (CPO) have successfully restored public trust in department in their jurisdictions, as the public representatives from grass-root level have come up with financial as well as moral support to bring reforms in the system.
This may be noted here this is the first time in police history; the people have voluntarily offered their lands besides providing monetary support to DPOs for the up gradation of ‘hollow police skeleton.
CPO Multan SSP M Aamir Zulfiqar Khan, DPO Nankana Sahib Dr Haider Ashraf and DPO Sahiwal Rana Ayaz Saleem by utilizing their professional skills and initiating positive steps, have comparatively restored public trust in police department, the institution which was never trusted in such perspective.
Dr Haider Ashraf said, “Seven police chowkis, Computerized Crime Record Branch, installation of tracking system in patrolling vehicles, Emergency Police 15 setup and Complaint Management System have been established under Private-Public Partnership Programme”
. According to him, when public representatives at broader level observed that police cops were practically interested to bring reforms for maintenance of law and order they extended their all support for our help.
Dr Haider Ashraf said some people even donated eight canal land, hundreds of thousands of rupees and etc to upgrade the police system. “Yes, when people realise the DPO was keen interested in solving their problems, they always come out with their resources to support police department,” he added.
The DPO Nankana further said Public Reconciliation Committees and the role of Supervisory Officers (SDPOs) were being stimulated and even checklist has been made according to which the entire investigation process would be completed till the challan of the case is submitted in court.
After witnessing such reformatory steps, District and Sessions Judge Mr Mehfooz has expressed to deliver lecture on hindrances during investigation procedure. “With the permission of Provincial Govt, I am eager to start Commercial Ventures in District Police on footings of Pakistan Army,” he added.
Talking to this scribe CPO Multan Aamir Zulfiqar said that a number of people have approached him wishing to contribute – monetary and morally – besides expressing their intention to serve the victims of different natures. “Watch, Reconciliation and Market Committees are being established in collaboration with the Multan Police,” he added. The CPO Multan further said the concept of reporting rooms would be materialized within days.
“Once I was SSP Lahore, the traders, town nazims and other affluent people donated 450 motorbikes for Muhafiz Squads while 3000 CCTV cameras were installed at sensitive points,” he said, adding reporting centres were established in each police station. He added that even a historical building located in Old Anarkali was utilised for this purpose.
Similarly, DPO Sahiwal Rana Ayaz Saleem said he in consultation with DCO Sahiwal and invited all the 1057 Numberdars (A sarpanch is a democratically elected head of a village level statutory institution of local self-government) and discussed about crimes, reasons, detection and even their reservations on police as well as district management.
Ayaz said during consultation, pamphlets about banned outfits were distributed among them with advices to inform police about hideouts of the suspected terrorists. “When they were realized their importance and role in controlling crimes and maintaining law and order, all of them agreed to extend all of their efforts in general interest,” he said, adding: “Yes, if anyone from them will found involved then his Numberdarship would be cancelled and all the privileges and perks would be retaken.” Secondly, the DPO said the Thekry Pehra system was urged to reinstate in their jurisdictions.
